After visual inspection, alcohol evaporation and flux pens come thermal camera images. We use thermal cameras to find defective components when other methods fail. We got one!!! An official Sony modified CECH001 (aka. PlayStation 3 ). A Sony made PS3 Frankenstein console! This was brought in for a 'non functional' optical drive, when the modification was discovered upon disassembly. The customer purchased this console from E-*ay a few years back. Based on the the multiple stickers, Sony performed their magic back in 2019. This console was repaired and returned to it's owner. Only a handful of consoles were modified by Sony, and it was a real pleasure to finally work on a historic piece of hardware like this. -- TheMachine April 2026

Liquid Metal is by the factory on all variants of PlayStation 5's. Sony has been using LM (Liquid Metal) since the first design of the PlayStation 5. LM can escape the foam barrier when the console has dropped, or the console has fallen. The LM can also escape the foam barrier when the it is HOT and console is run vertically. We HIGHLY recommend to have your console cleaned, and run it horizontally. Once the LM escapes the foam barrier and runs across the motherboard it all but impossible to fix.
